Wasp nests begin in early spring when the queen wasp emerges from her winter hibernation. She builds a small nest about the size of a golf ball where she lays 6 eggs in individual chambers. Once the eggs hatch these “worker” wasps continue to build the nest whilst the queen lays eggs. By mid October the nest can contain as many as 30,000 individuals.
During the summer we received a telephone enquiry from a lady in Wigston. The lady told us she thought she may have a wasp nest but it was her son’s birthday and to celebrate they were having a party in the garden. She was worried that the wasps would bother the children at the party or worse still one of them may get stung.
We always respond as fast as we can to call-outs and promised we would get to her quickly. When we arrived at the house we surveyed the property and found lots of wasps were heading for an extractor fan vent outside the kitchen. We could see them entering the vent which had to mean they had built a nest in the wall cavity.
Wasps often build their nests in strange and hard to reach places so we always carry a range of specialist equipment to treat them. We quickly put on our protective clothing as we’re not brave enough to attempt to tackle a wasp nest without it and set about getting rid of the wasps. After treating a nest there are always a few wasps left buzzing around so we reassured our customer they would soon be gone in time for the party.
