Black ants usually nest outdoors close to buildings and prefer to feed on sugary foods. They will often cause distress to people when they’re foraging takes them into homes and offices. In ideal conditions a queen ant is capable of living up to 12 years.
Our customer was a newly renovated and recently opened pub and restaurant in a quiet Leicestershire village. In early February they started to notice ants on the bar and several customers had commented. Some of the locals, who knew the pub before the renovations, told them how the ants were a real nuisance to the previous landlord. The new owners were not prepared to let the ants interfere with their business and wanted them gone.
We arranged to call early the next morning to find out where the ants were coming from and started our inspection in the bar area. February is still very early for ants but they seemed to be emerging from every crack and crevice and they were all over the place. We found out that a new under floor heating system had been fitted during the renovation and this must have been the reason why the ants were active so early in the year. Taking into account the history of the premises it was apparent that somewhere under the floor was a large ant colony.
For a long time the best way to get control of a garden ant problem has been to spray their trails with insecticide but this only acts on any worker ants which are foraging. We had recently received a new product manufactured specifically to target ant colonies so we were keen to put it through its paces. We started treatment immediately by placing discrete bait stations in areas where they would intercept the foraging ants so they could take the bait back to colony. A few days later we were back to ensure the treatment was effective and our customer was really pleased because the ants were vanishing and the best thing, we hadn’t had to spray insecticide all over his pub.
Keeping an open mind to new types of treatment helps us stay one step ahead of the pests and keep our customers delighted.
