Rat problems? We will solve your problem

Rats will live in any situation which provides them with food, water and shelter.

Rats are often found living in sewer systems and are agile climbers and excellent swimmers. If they move into your house they will often live in roof spaces, wall cavities or under floorboards. In gardens they will burrow into compost heaps and grassy banks or live under your shed.

No one wants them in or around their home and they are feared for spreading germs and diseases.

Jonathan Fox of Intelligent Pest Control said "rats are possibly the most disliked and feared of pests that we treat, as we know they live all around us and no one wants them in their home, business or garden. Fortunately we can treat rat problems effectively and cost effectively taking away the stress and fear of the home or business owner"

Jonathan went on to say "whilst we provide a "one off" service to homeowner the majority of our work is treating rat problems on an on-going basis for businesses and organisations, we offer a comprehensive and cost effective contract service and have established a strong reputation in the Midlands"

You can contact Intelligent Pest Control by calling 01162402005 or visiting the website at www.intelligentpestcontrol.co.uk Intelligent Pest Control are represented across the East Midlands in Leicester, Derby, Nottingham and Northampton providing a comprehensive service, only a call away we can often visit you on the day of your call.

Further details on rats are provided below for your information:

Preferred foods are cereal products, although rats are omnivores and will eat almost anything that humans eat. Most damage caused by rats is through gnawing and ripping open packets of food. They also spoil and contaminate food with their urine, droppings and hair.

Rats gnaw continually to wear down their front teeth, even on non-food materials such as electrical cables, pipework and wooden fixtures.

Householders can assist in preventing rat infestation by taking a number of simple precautions.
1) Keep your home in good repair. Rats only need a gap of 15mm to gain entry.
2) Remove potential nesting sites by keeping yards and gardens clean and tidy, and by cutting back overgrown areas.
3) Ensure that drain inspection covers are in place and are in good repair.
4) Seal gaps around heating and water pipes.
5) Do not leave household waste where rats can get access to is, close dustbin lids and composters and do not feed wild birds to excess - you may be feeding rats as well.

Mice in the home or Office? We will sort the problem

As we move into winter and the weather gets colder we start to see an increase in mice getting into your home.

Jonathan Fox, Director of Intelligent Pest Control says "we are already starting to see an increase in calls from people who have or suspect they have mice in their homes. As soon as temperatures start to drop mice start to look for somewhere warm and dry and your home is the first option. The recent rain has made the problem worse as it has encouraged the mice to search out somewhere dry."

Whilst you may feel that a visit to your local hardware store for some traps will sort your problem Jonathan recommends against this.

"Traps can be effective, however they will not necessarily sort the problem, they do not always catch the mice and you are left to move the dead mouse and trap, we provide a very cost effective solution, we deal with your problem and eradicate the mice quickly and effectively"

You can contact Intelligent Pest Control by visiting the website at www.intelligentpestcontrol.co.uk or calling 01162402005. Intelligent Pest Control are the Pest Superheroes of the Midlands and covering Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Northampton and all areas in between.

Information on mice is detailed below giving a little more detail and we look forward to being of service.

Mice live in nests that they build out of cloth, wool and paper. Nests are often built inside houses, in places such as roof spaces, under floors or in wall cavities and wherever there is access to a good source of food, especially during the winter, mice tend to move in doors at this time for the warmth provided by your house. Mice can squeeze through cracks as small as 5mm however mouse holes are normally 20-30mm in diameter. Mice are mainly active at night and can often be heard running about as they search for food.

Mice will eat almost anything. Most of the damage they do is by gnawing and ripping open packets of food that they find. They often spoil food with urine and droppings. Mice will gnaw their way through wood to get to sources of food.

Mice gnaw continually on materials such as wood, carpets, paper, cables, pipes and furniture. In addition to the damage caused through gnawing, mice have been known to spread diseases such as salmonella and listeria, which lead to food poisoning and stomach upsets.

Householders can assist in preventing mouse infestation by taking a number of simple precautions.

1) Keep your home in good repair. Mice only need a gap the diameter of a pencil to gain entry.
2) Remove potential nesting sites by keeping yards and gardens clean and tidy, and by cutting back overgrown areas.
3) Seal gaps around heating and water pipes.
4) Ventilation bricks and slots should have a fine wire mesh incorporated. If this is worn, replace it externally with    3.15mm insect mesh.
5) Do not leave household waste where mice can get access to is, close dustbin lids and composters and do not feed wild birds to excess - you may be feeding the mice as well.

Fleas? Contact us for an effective solution

Flea Problem? We will get it sorted

Most domestic flea problems are caused by cat, dog or bird fleas. It is extremely rare to have a problem caused by the human flea.

If you have a flea problem do not despair it can be treated and we can provide the solution.

The most likely cause of a flea problem is that fleas are bought into the home by your pets, you, your family or visitors.

Adult fleas are a parasite which means that they live on other living things and are reliant on them for their food and survival, in the case of fleas they feed on the blood of their host, normally your pet.

Female fleas lay their eggs after feeding on their host. The eggs they produce then drop onto the pet or the floor or onto the animals bedding. After a few days the eggs will develop into larvae which take 2-3 weeks to fully develop. Once the larvae are developed they spin a cocoon where it spends a further two to three weeks before emerging as an adult flea.

Female fleas lay eggs normally in batches of approx. 20 and an infestation can quickly occur. Once you have an indication that you may have a flea problem then contact us immediately. Fleas are usually 1.5 - 3mm long and are a reddish dark brown colour as you are probably aware they are extremely good at jumping so if you see small "bugs" jumping you may well have the start of a flea problem. Another indication of fleas is that your pet is scratching regularly or you may have small red bite marks on your body.

At Intelligent Pest Control we can solve your flea problem quickly, effectively and efficiently. We will visit your home at a time convenient to you and with your agreement commence treatment immediately. So do not delay call us now for quick hassle free eradication.

If you have "bites" on your body, spots of blood on the bed sheets and are itchy you may have a Bed Bug problem. CLICK HERE for more information. If this is the case do not fear, they are treatable. Here are our Top 5 Facts on Bed Bugs.

1) Bed Bugs have nothing at all to do with the cleanliness or state of your home, they have nothing to do with yours or your families hygiene and they may be found in the cleanest and most modern of homes.
2) You get Bed Bugs by being exposed to them, that means you "pick them up" from locations where you may have stayed, hotels, Guest Houses, Friends or from holiday. When they find you they do not know what conditions you are going to take them back to, however they adapt and are very robust pests.
3) They breed at an amazing rate and once you "have them" they will quickly spread around your home.
4)They are extremely difficult to treat, they cannot be effectively treated without expert involvement.
5) You are not the only ones - there is a worldwide growth in Bed Bugs, millions of people are suffering so don't feel it is just you.

To effectively treat Bed Bug infestations you need professional help, whilst you can buy treatments to use yourself it is extremely unlikely that you will clear the infestation. It may seem a good idea, however it will be more costly as you will inevitably have to call in the experts in the end.

The risks posed by pigeons and the importance of pest control

Pigeons are a common sight in our modern world; you will rarely go an hour or two without seeing a pigeon or flock of pigeons. Surviving on scraps of food left behind by us, you may have even heard them described as flying rats.

People enjoy feeding pigeons however this simply helps to attract them back time and time again. Pigeons will fly considerable distances for food or water and once they find it they will continue to return. Like us, pigeons are lazy and they find the easiest way to get what they want. They will want to come back to your property whether it is your home or business premises and seek out somewhere to "set up home" close to an easy source of food.

Business or commercial premises provide an ideal location for pigeons to reside as they are very often unoccupied between 6pm and 8am. This means they are relatively undisturbed and often close to easy sources of food from waste left in the locality or close to residential areas where food and water are easily found. Once they have "taken up residence" they will quickly grow in numbers and can cause considerable problems.

Pigeons creates an even bigger issue as they can carry a number of diseases including Salmonella and tuberculosis, whilst not proven these could be transferred to humans, a risk we would all wish to avoid; in addition their droppings are corrosive to buildings and can harbour infestations of insects as well as posing a serious health risk caused by bacteria. See our Case study by clicking here

The most effective way to control pigeons is to remove any nearby food and water but it will take some time for the pigeons to move on, likely to be months rather than days! If pigeons have become established in or around your premises or property it is very unlikely that you will be able to get rid of the problem without the help of professional pest control.

Professional Pest Control is the only way that you can effectively treat an infestation of pigeons. Jonathan warns, "If you see a number of wasps around your home or garden then you are likely to have a nest very close by, do not try to treat it yourself as you need the correct safety clothing and equipment to avoid potential danger". Britain's Largest Wasp Nest has been found in Southampton containing half a million wasps; whilst this is extreme it evidences the growth in the wasp problem this year.

Jonathan Fox, Director of Intelligent Pest Control Ltd warned of a wasp plague recently. Jonathan said "The warm temperatures we saw in Spring, have certainly aided the wasp population, we are receiving several calls each day from customers, the number of calls and the size of the wasp nests we are seeing are extremely unusual for so early in the Wasp season."

Jonathan advises:
Do not disturb the nest - wasps are very defensive and can sting several times.

Do not try and remove or treat the nest yourself - it can be very dangerous and is best left to the experts with the right treatments and safety clothing and equipment.

Keep Children and Pets well clear of the area - with a wasps nest likely to contain in excess of 5000 wasps they can create a serious danger.

Jonathan added "Please do not try and treat the nest or the problem yourself, it is important that it is left to the professionals, whilst you may be tempted it is not worth the risk, we can treat and eradicate the problem, quickly, efficiently, cheaply and we will also give a guarantee, I guarantee customer satisfaction."

How do I get rid of Bed Bugs?

How do I get rid of Bed Bugs?

Jonathan Fox, Director of Intelligent Pest Control Ltd, the "Superheroes of Pest Control"¸ has been telling of the marked increase in Bed Bug calls that his business has been receiving over recent months. Jonathan said "Bed Bugs are certainly making a strong return to the East Midlands we are receiving at least 3 calls a week where people have identified a problem and the calls are coming from across the area including Derby, Nottingham, Leicester and Northampton".

Jonathan stated that "Finding Bed Bugs in the home isn't necessarily a sign that your home isn't clean. Bed bugs are hitchhikers and can be picked up from anywhere. If you visit a hotel, guest house, recently returned from holiday or just a friend's house you may, without any knowledge, have picked them up and bought them home with you".

Once you have unknowingly picked them up Bed Bugs feed on human blood, unfortunately they are not interested in the crumbs and bits of food left around they are only interested in you.

As soon as you suspect you have Bed Bugs contact us for professional support, advice and eradication you can call us on 0116 2402005 or click here

How do I know if I have Bed Bugs?

The key indicators that you have Bed Bugs are:

Finding bites on your body and you are not sure where they are from (very often realising they are there when you wake in the morning)

Finding blood spots on the bed sheets

If you have either of these then you need to contact a professional Pest Control Company such as Intelligent Pest Control Ltd who are local to the East Midlands and have local specialists in Derby, Nottingham, Leicester and Northampton and cover all the areas in between.

Jonathan explained "Bed Bugs are very hardy insects and people do not realise they have a problem until they have a substantial population. We treat the areas on our visits to start the eradication of the Bugs, more than one treatment is required to fully eradicate the problem and we work with our customers to ensure that they understand what is being done and how long it will take"

In addition to treatment Jonathan recommends that you take the following actions:

1) When staying away store your suitcase in a large plastic bag, this will help reduce the chances of Bed Bugs taking up residence and coming home with you.
2) Vacuum your suitcase after returning home, if any Bed Bugs have "moved into your suitcase" this should help get rid of them.
3) Check Bed Sheets for tell-tale Blood spots.
4) Do not bring second hand mattresses into the home without fully inspecting them first.

If you find that you have or suspect having Bed Bugs in your home then contact us, we will discuss the signs, come to your property and inspect the area and advise you on the best course of action to take. If treatment is required we will work quickly and effectively to clear the problem and return your home or premises back to normal.

Wasp Plague Warning

Homeowners in Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Northampton  are being warned to watch out for plagues of wasps if the current weather continues. Wasps nests need treatment as soon as they are identified to avoid a health risk and potentially high costs of treatment.

"Warm temperatures during the Spring along with the recent rain are ideal breeding grounds for wasps and we are expecting to see a marked increase of Wasps nests in and around the home" said Jonathan Fox, Director of Intelligent Pest Control Ltd.

"Warm and damp conditions are ideal for wasps and we have had a large number of reports and treated more wasps nest so far this year than we have at this stage in previous years"

Wasps normally build their nests in lofts and outbuildings, a nest is normally built of paper and chewed wood and the number of wasps in the nest can grow at an amazing rate with colonies containing up to 3000 wasps. We recommend that the nest is treated as soon as it is identified as a wasps nest and a large number of wasps around the home is not only frightening, it can also be dangerous to adults, children and pets.

"Homeowners should not treat wasps nests themselves, the inherent risks are too high! They should contact a reputable Pest Control Company such as ourselves as early as possible", Jonathan said

Ants in the Home? How to deal with them

Garden Ants
The current warm weather is seeing an invasion of ants in many homes, these can be very annoying and can get in all the spaces where you do not want them, we thought it would be helpful to share some information to help you in understanding and deal with them:
Most common are Garden Ants also known as Black Ants - the worker ants are 4-5mm but the Queen can be as big as 15mm. Eggs are laid in the spring in nests that are typically in soil but can be in brickwork or under bark. Ants are attracted to sweet foods and leave a  trail back to their nests for other ants to follow to the food source. This is why you can have so many ants around your home.
So How do you deal with them?
Garden ants will only come into your home to search for food and are attracted by sweet and sticky substances. The first action is to make sure that there is no easy food source in your home by:

Always covering food - you don't know where the ant has been before it crawls all over your food
Clear away food and liquid spillages immediately
Clean food debris from under kitchen appliances
Clear away your pets food immediately it has finished eating

How do I get rid of Ants?
There are many domestic products available to treat ants, many are powders which can look unsightly around your home, or sprays that again can be unpleasant, all of these can be effective. However at Intelligent Pest Control we have solutions which are safe, discreet and extremely effective, no powders or sprays just simple treatment that will clear the nest in a matter of days. Contact us on your local number to obtain more details, our products will give greater value for money than the majority of super market available treatments.
